Impact of New Media on Political Conflict

Representatives from the government and academia talked about an Institute of Peace report on the role social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube play in motivating political action in countries where there is conflict. The report focused on individuals exposed to or participating in social media, intergroup relations, collective action, regime responses, and external invention. It concluded that new media such as blogs, Twitter, Facebook and You Tube have played a major role in contentious political action, and that the Internet is an effective tool for both change and manipulation.
